It’s almost Earth Day and PetFlow wants to help our pet parents go green! We know that oftentimes it does feel challenging to be a pet parent and still do your part for the environment, with all of the waste from cans, dog food bags, litter, and everything else you need to keep your fur baby happy and healthy. However, there are many things that pet parents can do to reduce their carbon footprint (and paw print) on our planet.
Responsibly Sourced Pet Products
Did you know that organic farming practices are actually better for the environment? This is due to the fact that the pesticides in non-organic farming contribute to pollution and can also cause a degradation in soil quality. The lack of pesticides is also better for the nearby wildlife. Organic farming uses less energy, conserves water, and erodes the soil less, making it more sustainable.

We wanted to help our pet parents go green by highlighting some of our favorite organic or eco friendly products here at PetFlow.
Kibble & Cans
If you’ve been thinking about switching your pet over to an organic kibble, we have a few different options.
Petcurean
When it comes to organic and eco-friendly products, Petcurean is one of the first that comes to mind. They pride themselves on sustainability. They are in the process of working on making their packaging 100% recyclable by encouraging the packaging industry to invest in further research. Petcurean also has a special line tailored towards sustainability, with packaging that is made from 30% plant-based material, produced from sugarcane. This line also has organic ingredients, sourced only from farmers who meet very strict organic farming standards. Check out Petcurean GATHER here for your dogs and for your cats.
Castor & Pollux
Since 2003, Castor & Pollux has been doing their part to reduce the carbon footprint of pet food manufacturing and setting the standard for organic pet food products. ORGANIX by Castor & Pollux is the only complete line of USDA-certified organic pet foods. ORGANIX recipes must meet rigorous standards before they can be fed to your pet. All ingredients in this line are produced without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and artificial preservatives. Every product in this line has organic chicken or organic turkey listed as the first ingredient, so you can be sure that your pet is getting the best. This line has dry kibble for dogs and for your cats, and also has canned food options in case that is the preference of your furry friend.
For another environmentally friendly option, we suggest Castor & Pollux Pristine. Castor & Pollux Pristine is prided on being responsibly and ethically sourced. This means that all of their proteins are raised with access to fresh air, light, and have adequate space to roam. The salmon they use is all sustainably and responsibly caught by MSC (Marine Stewardship Council)-certified fisheries. Check out the Pristine products here.
Freeze Dried
These days, every pet parent wants the best for their furbaby. Because of this, a lot of pet parents are switching to freeze dried options over traditional kibble. The reason why is because oftentimes, freeze dried foods are minimally processed with maximum ingredient content, since the nutrients aren’t lost in the process of cooking. They are typically raw, frozen, and then placed into a vacuum that converts the water in the food to vapor. If you prefer to feed your pet a freeze dried diet, but still want organic ethically sourced ingredients, here are some of our favorites.
The Honest Kitchen
One thing that sets The Honest Kitchen apart from other dog food brands, including freeze dried brands, is that their products are entirely human grade, made in a facility for human food. Honest Kitchen products contain no preservatives, byproducts, fillers, or GMO ingredients. With high quality proteins and organic grains, The Honest Kitchen is an excellent choice for your furry friend. Check out The Honest Kitchen on PetFlow.
Primal
Primal is an excellent freeze dried option for your pets. All ingredients are from vendors who raise humanely and grow sustainably. Boasting organic vegetables and high quality proteins, Primal is one of the best freeze dried foods around. One thing that sets Primal apart from other brands is the fact that each formula contains organs, which are some of the best sources of nutrients for your furry friends. All meat used in Primal products are steroid and antibiotic-free. They make their freeze dried nuggets for both cats and dogs.
Treat Your Pet
Some of our favorite organic pet treats:
- Fruitables: excellent for digestion with pumpkin, baked in an organic bakery
- Grandma Lucy’s: organic fruits and ingredients, oven baked goodness
- Open Farm: responsibly sourced freeze dried treats with organic fruits and vegetables, can also be used as a topper for your pet’s food
- Icelandic +: Treats made by Icelandic+ are free of toxins like pesticides and herbicides, genetically pure, and sustainably sourced.
What About Waste?
One thing we could recommend for dog owners that want to do better by the environment is switching to biodegradable waste bags. Earth Rated makes a waste bag that is vegetable based, and also makes sure their packaging is made from recycled materials.
For your cat’s litter box, Purina’s Yesterday’s News is a great option for the eco-conscious pet parent. It’s the #1 recommended eco-friendly cat litter recommended by veterinarians. The litter pellets are made entirely from recycled paper and have no harmful chemicals, making it an excellent alternative for clay litters.
Sometimes it does feel hard to be an eco-conscious pet parent, but we wanted to show that it isn’t impossible and point out some options that you and your pets can try. So enjoy Earth Day with your fur babies, get some sun, and remember to recycle! PetFlow boxes are made with a portion of recycled material, and all boxes we ship out are 100% recyclable.
